Car park art installation stops traffic
A Long Time is Not Forever, Bispebjerg Hospital car park, Copenhagen, Denmark

When is a car park not just a car park? When it has a story to tell and does it so brilliantly on each level of its parking garage. Patients, families, and staff of Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, are treated to a colorful art installation spanning the seven-level parking garage.

Visually enticing from the exterior, the Vanceva® panels are also delightful when viewed up close within each level of the staircase. For this reason, the jury of the 2022 Vanceva® World of Color Awards™ agreed that A Long Time is Not Forever is this year’s interior winner.

The art installation is the work of contemporary Danish artist Malene Nors Tardrup, who uses photography to create a commentary on social, political, and cultural topics. For the Bispebjerg Hospital car park project, Tardrup researched historical photographs from the Royal Library’s Picture Collection and Bispebjerg Hospital’s image archive to weave a visual history of the hospital’s past and present.

Photo collages are printed on 3490 x 1313 mm Weißglas with Vanceva® colored panels. The lightest mosaic squares in each window feature a Vanceva® color that serves a dual purpose: to create a colorful view of the outside surroundings while providing a vivid aesthetic to the interior architecture. Other color tones of the collages and photographs use ceramic digital printing on the Vanceva® colored laminated glass. The glass lamination and the ceramic digital printing are made by ThieleGlas.

Beginning at the first level, a combination of Vanceva® Sahara Sun and Sapphire color interlayers are used to create the green for “The Healing Garden”. Sahara Sun alone is used for the bright yellow of “Home” on the second level; Tangerine is used for the third level highlighting the “Bath & Massage Clinic”, and Ruby Red denotes “The Healing Architecture” on the fourth level. To create the vibrant purple of “Time, Space & Conditions” on the fifth level, Sapphire, Ruby Red, and Aquamarine color interlayers were combined to make the perfect shade of violet. Only Sapphire was used on the sixth level of “The Nurses,” and True Blue finishes the seventh level of “A Working Life.”

Visitors experience bold colors lighting the night sky as they approach the hospital’s car park. Once inside, they enjoy a remarkable experience in color and history for patients and families.

WOCA juror Monika Kumor says, “A Long Time Is Not Forever art installation introduces splashes of color to otherwise very utilitarian structure. It plays with multiple materials to tell the story of the place and to introduce light, color, and transparency in a very creative way. It gives a recognizable, strong, and uplifting wayfinding element in an environment that can be stressful and overwhelming for patients and their families.”
